a 1-minute piece

Hi all,

I'm sure you've heard of the 60x60 competition. I entered last
November, and a piece of mine was accepted.

I wrote 2 others, 3 total, for them to pick from. I actually think
they didn't pick the best of the 3. I want to share the piece I liked
the best with you now.

Can you identify the tuning?

I used some nice presets from the original sounfont versions of 'Early
Patches' (Google it)

This tuning has strong 7 and 13-limit implications.

Excellent work!

Depends if you are thinking of your 1/1 as G or C, but
if 1/1 is C, then you have a mode on G of a harmonic
series tuning as follows:

C 1/1
D 9/8
E 5/4
F# 11/8
G 3/2
Ab 13/8

and you are using tones 1 octave down from those
above:

G 3/2
A 27/16
Bb 7/4

More please. I really enjoyed this.

BTW, I gave closest 12ET names to the pitches just now... just
for kicks, the H-System names for tones and intervals of your
harmonic series scale ascending from C are:

C 1/1 Perfect Unison P1
D 9/8 Major Second M2
#~E 5/4 Small Major Third SM3
bb F# 11/8 Narrow Augmented Fourth Na4
G 3/2 Perfect Fifth P5
b‡Ab 13/8 Wide Minor Sixth Wm6
A 27/16 Major Sixth M6
#~Bb 7/4 Small Minor Seventh Sm7

As all are tuned pure, they are all 'Perfect' inflections, so
the names strictly including inflections would be:

Perfect Perfect Unison P.P1
Perfect Major Second P.M2
Perfect Small Major Third P.SM3

... and so on.

Let's hear the others.

Cheers,
AAH

I'm going to agree with Aaron Hunt on this one. Screams harmonic scale
to me, in C, with either 5/3 or 27/16 added. I thought it was 5/3 at
first, but upon comparing with some stuff in Scala, it seems to fit
better with 27/16.

Yes, you guys are right, it's harmonic, lower octave added 27/16....

Thanks for all the comments, and I'm happy to hear you enjoyed this!

Best,
Aaron.

I really like the percussion on this one. If it's also
synthesized, how'd you input the MIDI? From a keyboard?

Hey Carl, welcome back..the samples are all from 'Early Patches'
soundfont...I input everything, including percussion, from the
keyboard.

How do you make soundfonts play in a micro tuning?

I have several gigs of sound fonts

I use fluidsynth when doing playing in 'realtime', or a combination fo
FluidSynth and Rosegarden as player/sequencer, so I can layer voices.
Fluidsynth has tuning table (on a per channel basis, too) capability.

For non-realtime work, I sometimes use TiMidity, which has tuning
tables, and recognizes Midi Tuning Standard SYSEX messages (although I
haven't used that feature, or had to, yet)
