No idea how this (or difference tones between octaves that just
double the lower note) could have the effect mentioned. I think
Robert Walker's explanation is pretty straightforward.

Probably the better part of the musical instruments feature a
second
harmonic that is stronger than the first (this is certainly the
case if the instrument is played loudly), so memory might take
the strong
harmonic to be an octave above the "real range".
