Any clue where to find sound samples of this instrument in action?
It sounds quite amusing...like a Korg Kaoss motion pad only much more advanced and created decades before...

Hello friends,

My excuses to answer so late, I check my mails very unregularly...

Thanks to mention, I did not know I had this presentation in
wikipedia , which is of good intention but contains several errors...
Only the first phrase is correct ; then all the rest is misguiding.
By no means the characteristic and originality of the photosonic
process is only to be able to overlap several disks together - also,
the "synthetic sounds" produced by previous monodisks instruments in
the early 20th century (mainly electric harmoniums, with static
lights and none of my optical filtering tools), cannot compare, I
think, with what I can produce after 1250 different experimental
disks... (etc.)...

Does anyone knows what would be the best way to make corrections in
wikipedia ? I never did that.
Is there a way I can contact the person who wrote it, since it refers
to me, or do I have to be a wikipedia member ?

About finding more sound samples of the photosonic disk on internet,
I am afraid it might be difficult.
These old excerpts are from our organisation website, that has not
been updated for several years.
They come from the only CD I made to this day with the photosonic
disk, but recorded around 15 years ago, "Lumières audibles", which is
distributed in the US by the Just Intonation Network, or EMF, or
available directly from me.

I certainly have to work on making my recent music more available and
it's one of my projects.
(BTW the fractal phi waveform has been much improved since those
recordings !)

à suivre,

Hi Jacques,

I love the way your device sounds. Can I have you permission to use the
sound samples found on the internet as a sound source for a sampling
program? This would be with credit and a link back to the photosonic
website.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,

Thanks for asking (to use some of my music for sampling), because many do it without asking any permission -
and that's something I can't support, in any music.
If you say credit would be given, this means you would think of publishing such experiments...?
But I cannot give you my permission before I hear what you want to do with these sounds.
In addition, as I said, the photosonic sounds, fractal and others, have been much improved since these recordings - so I can't encourage sampling of these old (and low-quality) internet excerpts.
Wait for the photosonic disk to be available, and you will be able to use it for what you wish, like with any other instrument.
A few more years may be ?

Thanks for your appreciation anyway,

Hi Jacques,

I am a chemist by trade and a composer by night. By publishing I would
simply place it on my website for people like the tuning list members to
listen to. I have no illusions as to being able to make a living at this.

I essentially read your reply as meaning non.

I will respect your wishes though I think I speak for many on this list
that a preview of your latest work/sound - even just 30 seconds or so,
would be quite welcome. You have invented a very unique instrument and not
many people do that. I am sure we all would respect your wish not to use it
in a way you would not like.

Thanks,

Chris
