Meaningless little treasures in mean tone

The remarks by our on-line "educator" are really not worthy of too much
comment, in my opinion. There is absolutely no argument that composing a
piece in 31 tone, for example is ENTIRELY a different kind of experience --
motifically and structurally, to writing a piece in 19-tone, for instance.
This is more than "surface activity." There are whole "new worlds" out
there for us as composers, and the only thing "precious" is the fact that
we now have equipment and methods to accurately explore them (!)

That's the best reply I've seen so far, and I agree wholeheartedly,
_especially_ with regard to 22-tone.

Joe,

I believe you may have missed to the point. The impact that the statement
had on me was that it helped bring into my awareness the motivations that
lay behind my interest in music and microtonalily. I don't believe he was
judgeing or critisizing new ideas in music, but was offering an opportunity
for self examination.

The outcome for me was a reexamination of my priorities, to see what was
important, so that I could devote time to the first stage of composition --
discovering what it was that I wanted to right about, and unlocking the
creative potential to express something in music.
