RE: the discussion of the *lack* of chromaticism
in Bach - there are many counter examples to
the position that chromatic passages in Bach
are simply the result of chordal outlines.
Chromatic passages as melodic/thematic material
are all over the Art of the Fugue, as well as the
Musical Offering (for a good example, look at Canone 1
in the Art of the Fugue). They aren't runs in
the same way that you'd find in Mozart, but do
occur as moderate/fast figuration.
