Well sure, it's the comma problem. In Western music it's
an issue, anyway. One wants melodic continuity and pure
harmonies, but the pure harmony requires little melodic
comma shifts that throw off the melody./

Boomsiter and Creel did extensive experiments which can be found here.
perhaps the test were 'loaded' in one sense by that listeners perferred comma shift over say a more limited pitch spectrum needs to be acknowledged.
