Simple tone generator / exploring software?

I used to use JICalc in OS9 on my old mac. What is the closest to
that available now for modern systems?

Is there a free, simple program with tone generation (as simple and
pure as possible) that can enter frequencies or ratios and play simple
harmonies to demonstrate the simplest aspects of harmonic tuning?

I ask both for myself and especially for what to recommend to people
just starting to explore these things (so for that I'd want to know
about both Mac and PC options).

In harmony,
Aaron

Mac users can load the Basic Waveforms soundfont in
the CSE and TPXE synthesizer. Get the soundfont and
software here:

(the software is on the same page at the top.)

Cheers,
Aaron

Here are two pieces of freeware which are useful:

Audacity has a tone generator.

Tatsuaki Koroda's The Auto Tuner, originally designed for tuning Shakuhachi, here: http://www1.ocn.ne.jp/~tuner/tuner_e.html, is an excellent tuner, and I've found it useful to let the tuner generate a drone and then let it measure played or sung pitches against that drone.

Daniel, the page link fails. This little program sounds interesting...
