Stravinsky: Firebird

Stravinsky has got to be one of the greatest composers of the past century.
And JI enthusiasts are sure to dig Chicago's recent performance ('93,
w/Boulez). It's Deutsche Grammophon 437-850-2. In every way, one of the
best recordings I own!

Stravinsky's Firebird was my first Igor record

The three great ballets are amazing. The Rite of Spring
is a life long favorite. One of my favorite late works is
Agon, a serial piece. His orchestrations are amazing.

As for the Firebird, I was in a NYC movie theatre recently
(saw the Man on the Moon) and saw a trailer for the Disney
Imax production of Fantasia 2000. It opens with the final part
of the Firebird. The (then) British progrock band Yes
used to open with this piece before ripping into Siberian
Khatru. So I guess that's the first Stravinsky I heard too,
maybe 20 something years ago. I remember my father
introducing me to the Rite of Spring because I had discovered
odd meters through Progrock.

and what this has to do with this list leaves me clueless!

Agreed! I haven't heard Agon yet...

Oooo. All-new production?

Yessir! John Anderson can also be heard singing the theme from the Rite of
Spring on Yessongs.

What it has to do with the list, is the amazing just intonation that the
Chicago Symphony used on the recording I mentioned. Once again, that's DG
437-850-2.

I remember buying "Yessongs" without knowing anything about them. It was
just a 3-record set that was real cheap. I didn't know what the hell I was
listening to. It sounded like music for squirrels.

Thanks Carl. I'm glad you went off-topic for this one, it's one of my
favorite pieces of music! (Maybe it's because we're both Yes fans)
