Has anyone programmed Helholtz's dissonance algorithm and compared it to Sethares's, Kameoka & Kuriyagawa's or Harmonic Entropy? All I have seen in modern works are virtually illegible reproductions of the diagram in the Dover edition of On the Sensations of Tone.

I have stared at that one for some time trying to tell what the difference between these for a while

Hiya John,

I hadn't, but I asssumed it could be found in Sethares' book.
But I looked up Helmholtz in the index (2nd edition) and came
up empty-handed.

My pristine copy of Sensations is still at my parents' house
and I must admit I never cracked the spine. But as someone
(Aaron Hunt?) pointed out here recently, it's in Google Books!
The relevant section on the calculations of the famous curve
is on page 650 of the PDF. You can check if the curve looks
any better than in your Dover edition on pg. 320.

On an unrelated note, you may be aware that for a long time
the term "schismic" temperament was used on this list, but
we were told recently that it should be "schismatic" if we
cared to use correct Greek, and where did we get something
like "schismic" from anyway? We traced the term back to some
early web pages by Graham. But I'm happy to report that
Ellis can be seen using the terms "skhismic" and "skhistic"
on page 800 of the PDF.

Kameoka, A. and M. Kuriyagawa. "Consonance theory Part II: Consonance of complex Tones and its calculation method", Journal of the Acoustical Society of America vol. 45 no. 6, 1969, pp. 1460-1469.

I once tried and failed to reproduce their graph. The theory's an extension of Plomp and Levelt's involving the critical bands.
