Dear Michael, my thesis is located in the miscellaneous folder of my website www.ozanyarman.com. It is the PDF file that says my name and "tez". I still need to make few minor changes regarding the format demanded by the social sciences institute though. And there is the supervision by the university senate for the finalization of the whole thing. But it's mere formality I'm sure.

I have just completed watching/hearing a very interesting BBC program which was concerned with ideas which have recently been discussed on the tuning list.

Dangerous Knowledge

David Malone pays homage to mathematician Georg Cantor, physicist Ludwig Boltzman, Einstein's confidant Kurt Godel and code breaker Alan Turing - all great thinkers whose lives ended in tragedy. The programme also features interviews with those, including IBM research staff member Greg Chaitin, who are attempting to find out whether there are some things the human mind cannot know

http://bestdocumentaries.blogspot.com/2007/09/dangerous-knowledge-full-documentary.html

It will prolly be available on BBC iPlayer for those interested.

These ideas, of course, were dismissed as OT by Carl "the expert" Lumma, with ill-understood snipes at some of my secondary suggestions about low-frequency beating and consciousness.

Despite much thinking about the paradoxes of musical tuning fortunately (so far) I have been able to avoid the uncertainties in my own life which seem to have resulted in these "great thinkers" ending their lives tragically.

The way the programme was presented caused me to realise why I have encountered such strong opposition to my tuning concepts from all on the tuning list, except a few open-minded individuals.

If what I propose:

i.e. infinity, irrational numbers, the limitations of integer ratio interval/harmonics, scalecoding as a mapping for con/dissonance etc.

were to be accepted, these concepts would undermine most of the basic assumptions about musical tuning which have for the past fifteen years formed the foundation "knowledge" of the tuning list and its tunaniks.

---The way the programme was presented caused me to
realise why I have encountered such strong opposition to my tuning
concepts from all on the tuning list, except a few open-minded
individuals.

For the record, I STRONGLY support what you are doing.  In my mind you are right up there with William Sethares far as people innovating tuning.
He broke the lock by making certain tunings IE 10TET sound consonant and more "thesible" by tweaking timbre...
Meanwhile you are breaking the limits of how many scales can be generated that work with normal timbre (and aren't just random imitation of Just Intonation).  And I agree with that goal enough that I ALSO am dedicated to making non-JI-like consonant scales and the fact you've gotten so far very much inspires me: your scale beats virtually all non-JI scales I've heard in terms of being both flexible/expressive and easy to listen to, including those based on the "ever-popular" 19, 31, and 41TET arrangements.  And it sounds better to me than anything the great Harry Partch or Wendy Carlos ever did.
------------------------------------------------------------------
And, I agree....your topic is dead on.  We micro-tonalists need to realize how much politics is involved in bringing our arts into the public eye along with bringing it toward perfection.  If we don't have
listeners, we don't get feedback what people want and our efforts have less perspective in the greater scheme of things.  We can't just bury our heads in the sand hoping to become Beethovens and have people only truly recognize our works after our deaths.  We need to work like an organized congress of sorts, not just to put our mathematical ideas together but to make sure we convince people to take them seriously and keep them around.

And again, Charles, I believe in you and your theories, as many, if not most of us, should.

Best Regards, Michael
