It'll either be a stand-alone work or the beginning of something larger;
I haven't decided yet. Anyway, it's solo piano in 72 equal temperament,
nothing shockingly atonal. It's mostly in quasi-5-limit JI, but uses
approximated harmonics up to the twelfth a couple of times, and a
septimal minor blues scale at the end.

I'll try to get some other stuff written before long. I do have other
music, but it's all in 12-equal with occasional quarter tones.

Oh, I was afraid that would happen. The URL to the folder with only one

I got it set for public viewing, so it should work. If it doesn't, I
need to find another place for file hosting. My apologies to everyone in
advance in that case... ~D.

I like the piece! And I like the tuning - some nice harmonic-ish
intervals, indeed. Looks like 72-equal might be a tuning I like...

Thanks, I'm still learning my way around extended JI. The intention was
to imitate harmonic scales at the end of each "chorus". Actually, what I
did was interlock harmonics on two fundamentals a fourth apart.

Since we're talking about harmonic scales, I came up with a 13-limit
"chromatic blues" scale a while ago that uses all twelve keys of a
keyboard.

0. 1/1 ~ 0.00 cents
1. 13/12 ~ 138.57
2. 9/8 ~ 203.91
3. 7/6 ~ 266.87
4. 5/4 ~ 386.31
5. 4/3 ~ 498.05
6. 11/8 ~ 551.32
7. 3/2 ~ 701.96
8. 13/8 ~ 840.53
9. 5/3 ~ 884.36
10. 7/4 ~ 968.83
11. 11/6 ~ 1049.36
12. 2/1 ~ 1200.00

You'd need 87, 224 or 270-edo to approximate 13-limit though; and what I
I have recorded stops at 11. It, and most anything I'm going to be
writing for a while, should work in 31, 41 and 72-edo.

I quite liked this, somehow it does something, i don't expect it to. Some more of unusual things you touch upon.... Sometimes it is better to do these things more than once then people know you mean it:) They are quite fine. was something happening with the panning or is that just an illusion hearing it on headphones. it seemed to rock back a little too and fro.

Yeah, it does pan a bit; I haven't really noticed that until pointed it
out. It must be a combination of the soundfont (a classic stereo
acoustic piano), the reverb and the cheapness of my computer/recording
studio. The effect is purely accidental, and I get it with other
instruments, for better or worse.

Unfortunately, I no longer have this soundfont, so I won't be able to
record with it again. At least the piano sounds on my Roland synth is
decent, and I also have Frank Wen's Fluid soundfont, that 140+ Mb
monstrosity, which comes with Ubuntu Studio. ~D.

BLAH, grammatical errors. Blame lack of sleep. I meant "until you
pointed it out" and "are decent".

I'm using regular old MIDI with pitch bends. For anything involving one
or two instruments, I put each instrument on seven channels in
Noteworthy or Rosegarden (the latter I'm still learning how to use), and
tune them, in order: 0, -50, +17, -33, +33, -17, +50 cents. Instrument
one goes on channels 1-7; instrument two on 8, 9 and 11-15. Percussion
goes on channels 10 and/or 16.

I should make a PDF of the score for this tune, by the way. ~D.

Sounds very smooth, almost too smooth. Is this just 31-TET approximating 7-tone JI or, if not, what scale did you use to get it to sound so smooth?

It's 72-TET, but it could be tuned to 31. Or 41 or 53, and others.

I used this tuning to approximate JI; if the piece had been in true JI,
it would've been too smooth. The major third, for example, has a size of
23 commas (a comma being 1/72 of an octave in this case). So instead of
400.00 cents, which is 13.69 cents sharp of 5/4, I have 383.33 cents,
which is 2.98 cents flat. The diatonic semitone is 116.67 cents instead
of 100.00. 58 commas, or 966.67 cents, is just 2.16 cents sharp of the
seventh harmonic, and 33 commas, or 550.00, is 1.32 cents flat of the
eleventh.

72-tone is consistent to up 17-limit, but super-consistent to 11-limit.
It's a good approximation of Partch-43. There's plenty of info on
72-TET that you can find by just websearching; or at least just start
here:

temperaments A LOT)
