Hi there.

First of all, recently, I've been trying to find something like a "civilized" form of pelog in a similar way that I've seen suggestions for a "civilized slendro" to be either 5-EDO or the other temperament (whose name I don't know) which tempers out 1029/1024. I was comparing various pelog scales found in Manuel's archive. Trying to make some sort of "civilized pelog" out of it, I finally went for mavila. Maybe some of you have other suggestions for this but that was what sounded "least distant from the irregular pelog" to my ear.

And then, I made a new "half of a piece", so to say. Some of you may remember the one I made in mavila a few weeks ago. Well, now it's the second half of my new recording. The first half has just been made today. And here they are one after another, making the whole composition: http://download.yousendit.com/7D6213E75B6E0D55

Very nice! Except for the shanai (saxophone?) sound in the beginning
and after the middle of the piece.

Really? I'm surprised to hear this from you; I just thought the sound fitted in nicely. Personally, I'm not sure what else I'd choose to use instead of that. - I've seen more names for it; anyway, it's the GM program # 84 (or 85 if you start counting from 1).

From Robert. These two scales in 9tet might have appeal. 0-133-267-
667-800-1200 and 0-133-400-667-933-1200.

Yes that's fun. It reminds me of Moondog (who I really, like) in places.

Pity about the tuning;-)

I did not like it very much, possibly because of poor synthesis.

This is very nice, as usual, and makes a good case for mavila as a pelog tuning. Pelog is sometimes said to be related to a subset of 9-EDO, and in fact 9-EDO does make a good pelog scale. Mavila used to be called "pelogic" because of its pelog-like qualities; one way to describe mavila is as a combination of 7-ET and 9-ET. One of Easley Blackwood's microtonal etudes used a scale of 23-EDO which is basically the mavila scale.

Other temperaments related to 9-ET also have a variety of pelog scales; I've used bug temperament (which tempers out 27/25) as a pelog approximation, and orwell also has a reasonable pelog scale.
