Hello -

I recall reading in Schoenberg's Harmonielehre 1911
Edition his comments about "the overtones" being the
ultimate destination for musical harmony, although
current instruments weren't capable of accurately
producing harmonies based on the overtones (so we
might as well accept what will work on current
instruments and leave music more closely based
on the overtones to future musicians). However I
believe Schoenberg left a lot of his discussion of
the overtones out of his later (1920 I believe)
edition of Harmonielehre so that in that later
edition he seems more totally accepting of the
12 note per octave equal temperament system.
