AMERICAN FESTIVAL OF MICROTONAL MUSIC presents

MicroFest 2008: 2 Boston Concerts
Saturday and Sunday – May 3-4 – at 8 PM
Cathedral Church of St. Paul
The American Festival of Microtonal Music (AFMM, since 1981), under the
direction of Johnny Reinhard, presents 2 Boston Concerts on May 3rd and May 4th
at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul located at 138 Tremont Street. Concerts
begin at 8 PM and general admission is $15, $10 for seniors and students
(with ID) at the door. The AFMM piano tuner is Marc Weinert.
Saturday, May 3rd features a recital by violin soloist Dan Auerbach and
critically acclaimed pianist Joshua Pierce in THE DEVIL’S TRILL by Giuseppe
Tartini, a MINATURY by Krzysztof Penderecki, and the SONATA FOR VIOLIN AND PIANO
in G Major, Opus 78 by Johannes Brahms. Additionally, two solos are
featured by each soloist; these include the Boston premiere of PARTOTA by Hamburg’s
Manfred Stahnke for piano in Vallotti temperament (featured throughout the
program), and HUDBA (1922) for violin in quartertones by microtonal pioneer
Alois Hàba.
Sunday, May 4th brings the polymicrotonal theatrical opera ODYSSEUS by
Johnny Reinhard with over 50 musicians to its Boston premiere. Cellist Dave
Eggar reprises his 1997 NYC role of Odysseus. Boston native DeAnna Pellecchia
choreographs and performs. South Carolina’s Michael L. Vick inaugurates the
concert with the premiere of KIERANCELY for Glissentar and acoustic fretless
guitars. AFMM pianist Joshua Pierce performs INTERVALLI (1956) by fluxist
Florentine composer Giuseppe Chiari. And the Boston premiere of BALLETTO (1972)
by Victor Ekimovsky of Moscow will be conducted by Johnny Reinhard.
The New York City MicroFest 2008 concerts are: April 26th (Brahms, Stahnke,
Tartini, Penderecki, Hàba, Ferree), and May 1st (Bach, Mozart, Reinhard,
Buckvitch-Nichols), both at the Church of the Epiphany located at East 22nd
Street and Second Avenue.
