A gamelan is a kind of musical ensemble of Bali Indonesia typically
featuring a variety of instruments such as metallophones, xylophones,
drums, and gongs; bamboo flutes, bowed and plucked strings, and
vocalists may also be included. The term refers more to the set of
instruments than the players of those instruments. A gamelan as a set
of instruments is a distinct entity, built and tuned to stay together
instruments from different gamelan are not interchangeable.

Yes, but to modify this slightly - Baliness gamelan is just one
subtype of gamelan of which there are many others - Sundanese,
Javanese, etc. There are some lovely scala files available of some
estimated degung, slendro, and pelog tunings - as well as some Just
Intonation gamelan tunings available in Lou Harrison's Music Primer,
and there are some scholarly writings by various ethnomusicologists on
the various musics of Indonesia if you are interested in learning
more. I performing in a gamelan ensemble (with three sets of different
tunings, degung, slendro, and pelog) in Pittsburgh, PA for three and a
half years - and it was a lovely learning experience.
