Garrett Lisi, E8 and the Theory of Everything

With all the talk that has been going on lately about Garret Lisi's
"Theory of Everything", i'm wondering if there has been any previous
musical use of the E8, or similar algebraic groups.

Fascinating stuff, but a "simple theory of everything" should not give
one 'particle nausea'. I hate particle physics.

Everything is energy, man.

Erv sent me something on the subject, but that paper is back in the states

Particle physics describes reality fairly well ... do you hate reality
too?

Rather live in an alternative universe where 'everything is energy'?
(Whatever that might possibly mean - sounds like a religion to me.
Hey, I have nothing against religion, except when it tries to replace
science.)

Science is about statements that have a definite meaning and should
have consequences for the nature of reality. 'Everything is energy'
means about as much as 'Everything is karma' or 'Everything is
banana'. At the very most it could be taken as a statement of your
attitude to the world.

In physics one might say 'everything *has* energy' - that is just a
definition of what anything should be, in order to exist meaningfully
at all.

As for 'particle nausea'... a theory should to be judged by whether it
respects your sense of what is nauseous or not?

actually science can explain thing as easily from the perspective of
energy as much as matter.
basically it implies that we really do not know what reality is much
less do what we know whAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT.

I actually believe "Mad" Max Tegmark's Ultimate Ensemble Theory of
Everything which states that our universe is an abstract mathematical
structure and we are self-aware substructures of it who perceive it to
be "real". And all the other logically possible universes exist too. A
kind of neo-pythagoreanism: everything is mathematics, man.

So... BUMP! Does this actually exist, and when will we see it then...
i have a feeling it could be related to CPS somehow. /Ö

Mats,

By "CPS" one presumes you are referring to Cycles Per
Second.

I, too, would like to know more about Lisi's "theory
of everything".

Would someone please 'Bring it on?'.

The E8 lattice may be the appropriate lattice for 23-limit
(or 17-limit if odds are included) tonespace. I base this
only on the fact that it's the densest sphere packing in
8 dimensions, and the lattices for 3, 5, and 7-limit
tonespace are also the densest sphere packings in 2, 3, and
4 dimensions (respectively). Pure guesswork on my part though.

But Lisi's theory uses more than just the E8 lattice.

Hi Mark,

My Encyclopedia has a page for CPS which lists
the two definitions, and which each in turn have
their own page.
