Problema was originaly a Greek neuter word meaning a problem in geometry
or in general any kind of obstacle, barrier or problem-- a headland or
promontory for sailors, a defense for warriors, etc.

Greek neuter words borrowed into Latin regularly become masculines in
the Romance languages when the Latin masculine and neuter genders meged
into the masculine as Latin evolved.
