from the review:

>> "Joseph Pehrson's "Blackjinn," composed for woodwind
>> quintet is based on a near-just-intonation, 21-note scale
>> that the composer labeled "Black Jack.""

They could have done a little more research: the scale
is called "blackjack", one word with capitals not necessary,
and it wasn't labeled that by Joseph Pehrson, it's a name
that was agreed upon by consensus of several list members here.

Even putting the 2-word version into Google as
"black jack scale", the first two hits are to my
webpages about it, one of which has all the historical info.

another thing:

>> "The work is based on the poetry of Li Po,
>> a Chinese Turk..."

What the heck is a "Chinese Turk"?

Sounds like it was a good festival. I miss being
able to drive up to NYC to catch it each year.

Alas, to respond to Monz and Joe:

Reviewers never are perfect in their reactions; they can only give a sense.
These three 10 PM club atmosphere concerts precluded handing out written
programs. Truly, blackjack making any appearance at all is more to the point.

Chinese Turk = Uigar. Surely, Monz, you have heard of them.

As to Joe, alas, we can not put every live performance we have up on the web
site, incorrectly indicated in the review. But I promise to make some
interesting changes and additions soon. :)

Juan-nie,

Do you know of any non-muslims in Turkey other than,
say, a few Armenians?

Some of them seem to be Chinese in the same sense that some Kurds are Turks.

Monz, even if you've heard about them, thanks for asking, because I haven't - I'd have guessed she meant Mongols.

Yes, i already knew about them because of my interest
in languages. The 1981 Encyclopedia Britannica had nice
color maps for almost all of the different language
families, but for some reason it didn't have one for
the Altaic family, which includes the Turkic, Mongolic,
and Tungusic subdivisions (and some linguists include
Korean and Japonic, but there is not agreement on this).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altaic_languages

So i drew my own map. In the process, i found out about
all the different varieties of those three subdivisions,
including Uighur/Uyghur.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uighurs

I didn't know that Li-Po (now usually spelled Li Bai)
was Uighur. I always thought he was ethnic Chinese.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Li_Bai

This is getting way off-topic, so maybe i can try
to bring it back around with a little self-promotion.
I have a webpage about my favorite of the Partch
Li-Po Lyrics: _The Intruder_:

Oops ... _The Intruder_ is one of my favorites, but
my very favorite, by far, is _A Midnight Farewell_.

I made the webpage about _The Intruder_ because
Gilmore's analysis was readily available.

Anyway, i updated the webpage after posting that link,
so now it has the nice Tonescape Den Haag lattices,
which look much better than the old ones that were
there before.

Ethnic identity is usually based on the native tongue,
i.e., the native language.

Uygurs live in what is now China, but their native
tongue is a Turkic language.

There are ethnic Kurds living in four contiguous
countries, Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran, but the Kurds
don't have their own country. With 25 or so million
speakers, the Kurds are the largest ethnic group in
the world that doesn't have a country of it's own.

The Turks speak a Turkic language, the Syrians and
Iraqis speak Arabic, and the Iranis and the Kurds
speak related but separate Indo-European languages.

To state that "some (Uygurs) seem to be Chinese in the
same sense that some Kurds are Turks" is asking for
trouble. It's like saying "some americans seem to be
black", or asian, or hispanic. They don't just "seem
to be", they are!

Klaus, you need to make the distinction between
"ethnicity" and "citizenship".

The Uygurs in Singkiang, now called Xinjiang Uygur,
are citizens of China all right, but they are not
ethnic Chinese, just as the Kurds in Turkey are
Turkish citizens, but they're not ethnic Turks.

At least a few Greeks and a few Assyrians, AFAIK.
