different pitches for the same key?

Hi,
I've a special question:
My idea is: I want to have the possibility to play the same key on a
keyboard with different pitches. As You all knw it is no problem to
have two different channels with to different scales but with the same
sound. I guess it should be possible to change between the midi-
channels using a controller, e.g. the soft pedal, but how could it be
done?
It is more a problem concerning midi, but I hope someone has an idea
that can help to solve my problem.
All the best

I did something like this using the keyboard split and so on editing level (don't remember the name; it's probably different with every synth anyway). Use one pitch for velocities 0-63 and the other for velocities 64-127. The loudness for the sounds is, of course, the same, and the velocity tracking envelope is not a ramp, but "square": ̄̄¯¯¯¯ˍˍˍˍ. If more modern synths have something like ˍˍˍ---¯¯¯, more than two pitches are possible.

Playing with expression like a pianist does is out of the question, but modulating wind or (bowed) stringlike sounds with the pitch wheel and aftertouch was OK for my humble needs.
