dumb letter in Guitar Player mag

The February 1999 issue of Guitar Player has a letter from guitarist
Liona Boyd which praises the Buzz Feiten tuning system up and down. The
bad part is the following quote: "For Years, I've been battling the
untempered tuning of my classical guitars..." etc. Maybe I'm missing
something here, but I thought 12 tone equal tempered instruments were
tempered...that's why it's called temperament. Sadly, Liona is an
advisory board member of GP as well...this sort of ignorance bothers me
greatly, and shows the complete lack of even the most basic knowledge of
what tuning is. I will write a letter to GP, and I hope others of you do
as well...if their advisory board is this misinformed, what about the
masses of ordinary guitar players who look to GP for info and
guidance...ugh...Hstick

Speaking as a now-dreadfully-rusty classical guitarist, I personally
haven't found Liona Boyd all that exciting a guitarist. For example, she
makes a bit too much of a new-age experience of the classics, and she has
really lumpy tremelo. When it comes to female classical guitarists, who
for some incomprehensible reason are a surprisingly rare breed, I've always
preferred Sharon Isbin. Although I'll have to admit that she had some
odd-sounding interpretations on her Bach lute-suite CD, overall her
performances strike me as a lot more true to the classical guitar concept.

In Boyd's favor though, she's the only one I know of who's recorded
Lecuona's Malaguea, which I think sounds wonderful on guitar.

But anyway...

That is a typical mentality coming from a magizine specializing in Hot licks
and crap like that--I abandoned that mag after a really insightful article
by "dimebag Darrell" of Pantera and his bitchin boss two note power
chords---yikes--. The only redeeming stories I have ever truly enjoyed were
about or by Frank Zappa(R.I.P). Playing guitar is nice don't get me wrong
but we are obviously all going to have to get togehter on some new kind of
newsletter/periodical to fill the gaps that,JI news,Xenaharmonkon,Interval
etc...have left. Iwould be willing to contribute financially and literally>
Is anyone out there intersted?

You're getting Guitar World confused with Guitar Player.
Neil is writing about GP.

Sorry your right it's the April 94 issue of GW not GP> Iguess i bought it for the
FZ Trib
but mainly those mags seem gear and tab oriented that's just my opinion. i play
fretles and a 37 fret jobber and and after fz passed kinda gave up on Gp as well.

Amen!

Microtonality is indeed a much better place for the consistent (and
fundamentally practical) work and focus of people like Mr. Neil Haverstick
