The term comes (to me, at least) from Paul Hahn. I've also called it
"dynamic (JI) tuning". It's the process of changing the tuning of a
piece on the fly, in response to the harmony of the moment.

I have examples, howbeit (as has been discussed at some length on this
list) preliminary ones, if you can play General MIDI files, on my web
site:

http://www.idcomm.com/personal/jadl/

including several Schubert pieces in adaptive 5-limit JI.

If you can't play MIDI files, I've got a small piece of my own coming
up on the Tuning Punks site, in adaptive 7-limit JI.

I think Lou Harrison called it "free style". Check out
"Lou Harrison - Composing a World" by Leta E. Miller
and Fredric Lieberman.

No, Lou Harrison's "free style" is an example of "strict JI", not "adaptive
JI", since Lou makes all _melodic_ intervals simple ratios, while adaptive
JI only makes the _harmonic_ intervals simple ratios.

And it's really very very nice... different from what I would have
expected also...

And it's really very very nice, which of course is just another way to
say that I enjoyed it... different from what I would have expected
also...
