Serge Donval Book. History of Musical Acoustics.
To Yarman 71336, Mohajeri 71340 and all others. I see that you havent read this book. There is a big entire chapter of 13 pages on what I call Arabo-oriental Music. I dont like the way the discussion about my book had taken, so I am willing to continue discussing over this point, in private. The text of this chapter is available, and can be sent to anybody on request. It is in french as you know, presently I dont have enough time to translate it. s_donval@hotmail.fr.

Hello M. Donval,

Alas, it seems no one has read your book on the list. However, Elodie
Lauten is a good friend. She told me by telephone that she admires what you did
and assures me that I would be quite comfortable with most of the major
tenets. She had done a university program at NYU based on math and music.

I am performing a new piece of hers this Wednesday evening, and she promises
to bring me her copy for a look. She tells me you support the idea that JS
Bach used Werckmeister III tuning. And she says you were quite careful to
bring in the whole world. I look forward to actually seeing your book and wish
you all good luck.

best,

Johnny Reinhard

Dear Serge,

I notice, that you have seen fit to dedicate only 13 pages to so
comprehensive a topic as what you deign to refer to as "Arabo-oriental
Music", as though the musical genres of the Near East had nothing to do with
anyone else other than Arabs?

And, by calling this "a big entire chapter", you surely exaggerate?

Candidly, I am a bit dissapointed. While the inclusion of Safi-al-Din
Urmavi, who was an Abbasid Muslim of Turkic lineage, is much appreciated,
the book seems to say (as I can glean from the summary) nothing much about
the rest of the world after the Renaissance, and thus, appears to be
Eurocentric. Are you sure the title is appropriate? Would you not rather
consider renaming it "A Concise History of General Musical Acoustics"?

Unfortunately, I do not read French. Still, if you think it useful, you can
send me the said chapter at ozanyarman@ozanyarman.com for future scrutiny.

Congratulations on your efforts.

Cordially,
Oz.

I strongly suggest to continue this discussion only after having read
the chapters in question. Discussions whose participants are ignorant
of the subject are quite repulsive to me. Unfortunately, exactly this
property is often typical for discussions of this kind...
(Sorry, but I REALLY could not resist this time.)
