As to the subject title, they already DO use the TUN format. I have
used this instrument for about two years already. They are just
getting around to porting it to the Mac platform. The developer is a
bit quirky, but he has a pretty good sized user-base who are quite
enthusiastic in their support for the instrument.

Jon

NP. I think it is a really good development, because it is a pretty
low-cost instrument with a *lot* of good sound libraries available for
it, and you can import a lot of available sample sets through some
converters. It renders the samples quite well, and is pretty low-CPU
intensive. One can get an awful lot of music made with this one
instrument, and having access to all those tunings without worrying
about pitch-bend anomalies and other issues is a real fun thing
indeed. I hope you and the many Mac-platform users will find it a good
situation as well.

I should also mention that the dev, WilliamK, is very, very responsive
to user issues and problems, and I've seen him fix stuff in a day. I
helped some during his implementation of microtonal support, and he
really keeps at it until things are (as) right (as possible).

For those wanting to see some of the dev/user synergy, he has a very
active forum over at KVR (as Charles, apparently, already knows!):

I've seen more than one format using a "tun" file extension. Which one is
this? And where can I find its specs?
Thx.

The .tun file format is a simple midi note to frequency mapping:

[Exact Tuning]
note 0=-149.362942
note 2= 54.547060
note 4= 236.950772
note 5= 401.955001
...

It seems popular among soft synth developers.

Do you have any idea if Scala supports it as well?

Yes. You can convert any or all of Scalas library of .scl files into
.tun format. You can save any tuning you have created in Scala as a
.tun format as well. I don't have it in front of me, but this is
documented either within Scala or at their website.

At one point I ran a batch command that Manuel showed me and converted
the entire library into .tun format, as I have instruments that use
either one or the other. Since then I just save a new tuning to
whichever format I need at the moment.

Jon

Oops, it actually in cents. Apparently the negative number comes from C4 being downtuned to 240 hz.

MIDI cents actually. Original specs by Mark Henning can be downloaded
here (bottom of the page):

Both Scala and Max Magic Microtuner support this format (save only).

The z3ta/rapture/dimension pro developer (Rene) prefers the scl format
(but doesn't support kbm for keymapping). A debate sparked once over
here about it. Most would probably be grateful for either scl or tun
format support.

Frankly speaking I still have to see a single good implementation of
both; besides some buggy releases I tested (I remember having had a
discussion about this on the MMMicrotuner list recently), one minimal
requirement in a microtonal synth should be the ability of defining
the range of its modulation controls in terms of scale tones, the
pitch bend wheel at least. What you have in these synths is a pitch
bend that still goes up and down in multiples of a hundred cents,
which is not natural at all for a player asking for microtonal
precision. All the required analysis work is ready and I put it here
together with a Max/MSP example:

http://homepage.mac.com/cerullo/.Public/mtx_file_specs.htm

Whatever the format they opt for, developers should concentrate a bit
more on this in the future to make something acceptable for
experienced performers.
