Actually, the balance problems I had were not in the strings, but between the
various instrumental groups. I have very good muted string sounds, and I have
heard the piece live at least a half dozen times, so I am satisfied with that
element of the WAV rendering.

In the end, our differences will remain differences of opinion, but to my
mind, the "silence of the druids" should be as flat a surface as possible and
the fact of all those open, many-octave-displaced major thirds just creates
too much beating in pythagorean. I happen to love beating and difference
tones (e.g. in Alvin Lucier's music), but they don't fit this piece.

an exercise almost anyone can do at home.
