Yulegu Island (gamelan version)

I thought it might be interesting to follow Gene's suggestion and see what Yulegu Island would sound like with gamelan instruments. I don't have anything that sounds exactly like that, but I came up with a couple of sounds that have a similar quality. I ended up doubling them an octave higher since it sounded better that way.

It doesn't sound that much like a gamelan orchestra, but it makes for
quite a change. It now sounds less like ancient oriental vampires
awakening from their tombs to greet the night, and more like an old
Japanese man reflecting about the course of his life.

Sounds quite similar to a gamelan orchestra.

Oz.

Well, it's missing the drums, gongs, and cymbals for one thing, and the tuning and style of the music are both atypical for gamelan instruments. In particular, doubling the bonang an octave higher sounds wrong. But it does add an interesting texture to the music.

These instruments do sound better in bug temperament with more appropriate musical textures, but they could still use improvement. One of these days I'd like to try some bug-based gamelan music, or maybe something in orwell.
