AMERICAN FESTIVAL OF MICROTONAL MUSIC
presents
MicroFest 2007
April 29 • May 2 and May 8 -- NYC
The American Festival of Microtonal Music (AFMM), under the direction of
Johnny Reinhard, presents 3 New York Concerts at the Bowery Poetry Club (located
at 308 Bowery at Bleeker Street). The series begins on April 29, continues
on May 2, and concludes on May 8. All three concerts start at 10 PM.
General admission is $10 at the door. Internationally recognized bass trombonist
Dave Taylor is the AFMM’s featured performing artist this year.
Sunday April 29th spotlights Boston-based David Fiuczynski‘s MicroJam
quintet,
featuring: Justin Purtill (bass), Anthony Steele (drums), with Mr.
Fiuczynski and Simon Yu (quartertone guitars). Bass trombonist Dave Taylor performs
Johnny Reinhard‘s solo ZELIG MOOD RING. Mr. Taylor joins with Mr. Reinhard
on bassoon, and with MicroJam, for a robust evening finale
Wednesday May 2nd is a presentation of several new works featuring winds
instruments.
Elodie Lauten launches ECOCITY for wind quintet and percussionists.
Composer Johnny Reinhard introduces a polymicrotonal concerto, IMPRIMATUR for solo
bass trombone, wind quintet and percussion, featuring bass trombonist Dave
Taylor. Joseph Pehrson has us play BLACKJACK for wind quintet, tuned to a
21-note subset of 72-tone equal temperament. Composer Kyle Gann celebrates THE
DAY (REVISITED) for flute, clarinet, keyboards, and electric bass guitar. Mr.
Gann will be performing on keyboards, with his son, Bernard Gann, on
electric bass guitar. The wind players for the entire evening include AFMM regulars
Jennifer Grim (flute), Hideaki Aomori (clarinet), Ron Kozak (oboe), Johnny
Reinhard (bassoon), and Rheagan Osteen (horn), with Christine Bard and Mustafa
Ahmed (percussion).
Tuesday May 8th is a focus on the great American microtonal pioneer Harry
Partch as
embodied by his SEVENTEEN LYRICS OF LI PO. Johnny Reinhard intones
microtonally to Partch’s system in partnership with violist Anastasia Solberg.
Internationally acclaimed bass trombone soloist Dave Taylor makes his third
appearance to premiere still another composition by Johnny Reinhard.
