Given how much exposure through gigs and releases they
(Matt & his dad), it should happen at one point. Matts had
at least two releases this year of his own groups.

I've noticed how little they talk about microtones too.
I guess it's all just jazz.

You could very well be right. If so it will be interesting to see if
any of Mat's 'rock music' (of which there is mountains) sees the light
of day.

Yeah, and it seems like he was a sideman on at least dozen others as
well... Things really just took off for Joe and Mat after that first
Leo release (GET READY TO RECEIVE YOURSELF) with the 'testimonials' by
Cecil Taylor and Paul Bley (etc.), which is really just incredible
when you consider that Joe was in his sixties before he had record out
under his own name -- oh yeah, check this out(!)
<http://www.npr.org/programs/anthem/bios/comic.html>. Obviously things
will be pretty different for Mat in this regard...

Joe can sometimes be just as big (and LOUD) of an evangelist for "the
cause" as anyone you could possibly imagine, and as he also has a real
strong and vivid type of a personality, this can have some fairly
predictable results: those who agree tend to love him, and those that
don't agree tend to, well, not love him... his approach (much like
that of Partch in this respect) just doesn't leave a lot of room for
middle ground! Mat (and this is just my opinion or assumption, as he
never said as much to me) has always seemed (again to me) 'suspicious'
of having to call anything microtonal... and I mean suspicious only in
the sense that if it's good or quality music then it shouldn't have to
call itself anything... it should just be good... or should just be
what it is; which is to say somewhat self-evident, or
self-explanatory... so in that sense I think you are very much on the
money when you write "I guess it's all just jazz" (or at least that
sounds right from my perspective anyway...).
