The hobby rotation has swung back to microtonal music, and it seems
I've chosen an auspicious time to return. I'm in the process of
upgrading my web site (http://algocompsynth.com/) -- it hasn't been
touched in a number of years, as you'll see if you visit. Since I left
the list, HarryIannis II was built (in Lisp, at David Cope's WACM
workshop in 2004) and HarryIannis III is under construction, though I
haven't put together the whole toolchain yet.

So ... speaking of toolchains :) I am currently looking at IanniX,
ChucK and PureData (pd), which share a common interface (Open Sound
Control). The glue/scripting language will be Ruby. I just went to the
Tonalsoft web site (congratulations, Monz -- looks fantastic!!) I'm
probably going to download the demo tonight and start testing it.

What else is out there?

Wow. Welcome back. Maybe you could give a direct link to
HarryIannis, explain what it is, etc.?

ChucK... I see this is a Pd plugin... what does it do?

It's an open source visual score editor that can send and receive OSC messages, so it's essentially a controller. It is based on Iannis Xenakis' "UPIC" interface.

ChucK comes from Princeton. It's a virtual machine, a language, real-time synthesis tool, etc. designed for what they call "on-the-fly" programming/performance. The software is evolved from and contains most of Perry Cook's physical modeling tools. Their web site is

http://chuck.cs.princeton.edu/

I may not use ChucK -- there are some intellectual property issues around the physical modeling technology that I don't want to deal with in an open source project.

The reason ChucK and IanniX appear together in my tool selection along with PureData is

1. They're all (I think) open source
2. They all can communicate via OSC
3. The IanniX download has examples for connecting to ChucK and PureData. IanniX also connects to SuperCollider, but I think for what I want to do, ChucK is a better fit because of the physical modeling capabilities if I can bypass any intellectual property concerns.

So ... if you want to experiment with this, download IanniX and look at the tutorial, then pick one or more of SuperCollider, ChucK or PureData.

I remember reading an interview where Aphex Twin praises UPIC.

Do you have any screen shots?

Sorry, I was confusing IanniX with your HarryIannis. Still I'd
like to see screenshots.

Thanks. I'll have a look at the tutorial.
