The Southwest Chamber Music Society, an LA-area new music group, is putting
on a concert that includes the following:

Harry Partch Barstow (perhaps John Schneider's rendition?)
La Monte Young The Well-Tuned Piano (no idea how this will be realized)
Lou Harrison Suite for Violin and American Gamelan
Frederick Lesemann Nataraja for Prepared Piano (Rick's a good friend of
mine, and I am anxious to hear this piece, but he's never written any JI
music that I know of)

Plus traditional Javanese gamelan music (probably the group from CalArts).
they are performing Saturday the 20th at 5:30 (!) at the Zipper Concert
Hall near downtown LA and Tuesday the 23rd at 8:00 at the Armory Center in
Pasadena. Tickets are $20, $15 for seniors and $10 for students. I'll
probably try to make the Tuesday concert. Anyone else?

I hope that whoever is doing this has got a very good lawyer! Young has
not published the score for this work and does not authorize anyone other
than Michael Harrison (and then only in private rehearsals) to perform it.

Ahh . . . the 'teflon' world of non-profits.

After receiving Dan Wolf's reply about a possible unauthorized performance
of The Well-Tuned Piano, I emailed someone I know in the Southwest Chamber
Music Ensemble to ask what the story is. Here is what she said:

> Actually, the LaMonte Young piece was scrapped from the program because
>he didn't respond to over 6 months of attempts at communication. Southwest
>also tried to substitute any other work of his choice on the program, but
>again got no response. So, we are instead doing an Ives group: several of

>lawyers...!)
> Hope you can attend some of these performances; the Lou Harrison
>gamelan/violin work should be stunning.

It's pretty disappointing, all the more so because they didn't replace it
with another JI piece. I'll still be there, though -- I wouldn't miss the
Harrison in any case.
