I truly find it a "real" joke when Dan Sterns listened the first time to
Larry Austin's version of the Ives' Universe Symphony expecting to hear
something in the line of Ives' Fourth Symphony. I'm sorry to say, but I do
find this very funny... They need to pass out little bags like they have
on airplanes...

At least maestro J. Reinhard's version of the Universe Symphony SOUNDS like
Ives, and if you haven't heard it yet, I suggest you somehow do so.
(Financial problems with the commercial release has made it impossible to
get this significant historical document to the larger public...)

Several of your esthetic and technical points, Dan, are very well taken,
but I can assure you we are in a MUCH different realm with the Reinhard
than with the Austin effort... (I mean, Larry Austin seems like a nice guy
and has written some pretty good music, but when it comes to Ives, I mean
really...)

Maybe I'm reading this wrong (and please let me know if that's the
case) but I take it that your saying it was a joke for me to expect
anything resembling something the likes of the Fourth Symphony coming
out of Larry Austin... If this really is your point, I'll just say
that I didn't know anything about (or of) Larry Austin when I heard
that *someone* had completed Charles Ives' Universe Symphony, so my
expectations were very much what they were. Unrealistic? no doubt...
but I'm not so sure I really understand why it was such a knee
slapper!

I haven't.
