Saturday AM, I dropped by a thrift shop and saw a reproduction of a
rather faded page from a medieval manuscript. Intrigued, I talked to the
manager, who turned out to be a neighbor and got it free because the
glass and matting were badly damaged) and guessed that it might be from
Ramon Llull's Ars Magna. A Google search took me to this set of
pages, including some music based on Llull's combinatoric mysticism.
Llull was a late 13th-early
14th century Catalan scholar, fluent in Latin, Catalan, and Arabic.
After being martyred trying
to covert Muslims in North Africa, he was beatified by the Catholic
Church. His work influenced
Leibniz (combinatorial maths) and he is credited with not only being the
first writer in Catalan, but possibly the first European novelist.

You mean, "convert", don't you John? These Christian missionaries came
preaching Jesus (Allah bless him) in a trinitarian fashion and annoyed the
already monotheistic Moors and Berbers to such an extent that they were
stoned to their deaths for crimes of heresy and sowing discord, the poor
wretches.

The "Middle Ages" of Europe and Islam intrigue me immensely concerning the
shared theory of music, so much so that we must commit more time and effort
trying to uncover the lost connections.

Cordially,
Oz.

What actually happened was that Llull was kicked out of Tunis. He went
back a couple of times more to North Africa, and got onto friendly
terms with the king of Tunis, exchanging numerous letters. The last
time he went to North Africa he returned to tell the Pope that a
crusade should *not* be launched against Africa, as some were
advocating. He recommended prayer as an alternative.
