Hi everybody,

I want to know where one can get a musicology academic degree, not
specialized in western music but if possible in Middle Eastern music,
and what are the best universities or faculties in this arena.

I appreciate your help very much.

The University of Michigan's musicology program now treats concentrations in nonwestern music on a par with western music.

You should apply to the Istanbul Technical University Turkish Music State
Conservatory Musicology Department my dear colleague, if you want to learn
all about Maqam Music, that is. I myself am writing my doctorate
dissertation on the music theory of this very subject within this school.
Please see:

Cordially,
Oz.

Rami, I believe there are ways to accomodate English speaking students. I
have seen foreigners frequent the place. You should also check MIAM:

Would that be Ali Jihad Racy, the buzuq specialist?

I've got a recording of him playing with Simon Shaheen on oud.

I think Mark Lindley is or has been at one Turkish university - boun.tr?

However, I don't know if he has expertise in 'Middle Eastern music'.
(... to my mind Turkey is very much Near East, if anyone uses that
term any more...)

That would be Bogazici University.

Middle East, Near East... what's so different about them other than the
inclusion of Caucasus, Russia and India?
