Vocal tools for microtonalists :
***************************************************************************
Anatares AutoTune :

Go here to the Autotune page, read the info there & then click on the
graphical mode link.

from there :

The Graphical Mode is similar to the Automatic Mode in that it also
continuously tracks the pitch of the incoming sound and modifies the output
pitch to be closer to a desired pitch. But in the Graphical Mode, the
desired pitch is not a scale tone, rather it is given graphically by you and
is called the "target pitch function".

...

In Graphical Mode, the user draws the target pitch function using line and
curve drawing tools.

--------------

They don't state the resolution, but they do say "...the .01 cent accuracies
by which the various scales of the Automatic Mode are internally specified."

We can now tweak vocals for microtonality !

The graphical mode is not available in the rack mount, so you'd need the
plug-in versions, or stand-alone version for Mac/Win.

****************************************************************************
KAE Labs VocalWriter :

Even freakier, but this time for Macs only. Many, many moons ago I mentioned
the vocal synthesis/composition tool, "VocalWriter". For some reason I
forgot all about it, but last night I downloaded the 15-day fully functional
demo from http://www.kaelabs.com. All I can say is wow ! o.k., it's not
exactly realistic, but perfectly usable as a composition, songwriting aid,
particularly for the vocally challenged, myself somewhere at the top of the
tree.

So, to get to why I've brought it up again :
You can use it to compose and synthesize microtonal vocals.

Let me repeat :
YOU CAN USE IT TO COMPOSE AND SYNTHESIZE MICROTONAL VOCALS !!!

You have to apply the appropriate deviation by hand for each note using the
"fine tune" editing function. The resolution :

1/50th of a semitone. 0 to 50 in increments of 2, so that's 4 cent
resolution. Nothing to get all worked up about in a synth, but for this...!

It's dead easy to use.
****************************************************************************
Oh yeah, Hi Neil !

Once again Outlook express did something funny while sending, so I'm not
sure if it got out. It didn't show up in both todays diigests, but apologies
if there's a repeat.

Did I mention that I teach singing? Even if you're not close to New York
City, I'm sure there is probably a decent singing teacher somewhere nearby.

>YOU CAN USE IT TO COMPOSE AND SYNTHESIZE MICROTONAL VOCALS !!!

Joe Pass (the late guitarist extraordinaire), Von Freeman (tenor
saxophonist in Chicago), Paul Bollenback (my guitar teacher for many years
and Joey DeFrancesco's regular guitarist) all told me the same thing:

************ Sing what you play and play what you sing. ************

Let me paraphrase them:

************ Sing what you synth and synth what you sing.************

>It's dead easy to use.

Singing is a learnable skill. We all learn to walk, we all learn to talk,
we can all learn to sing. It's not all that difficult.

John Link

Watch for the CD "Live at Saint Peter's" by John Link's vocal quintet,
featuring original compositions as well as arrangements of instrumental
music by Chick Corea, Miles Davis, Claude Debussy, Bill Evans, Ennio and
Andrea Morricone, Modeste Mussorgsky, Erik Satie, and Earl Zindars.
