A taste of 3-ET

🔗Herman Miller <hmiller@IO.COM>

Since Rosencrantz the Sane has been playing with 4-ET, I thought it might be interesting to put up a little demonstration of what you can do with 3-ET. Back when I was doing all those retunings of Ravel's Pavane, I did a number of versions that didn't end up on the web page, including a 3-ET version. I figured it was just a subset of 12-ET, without even any potential for harmonic progression, so it wouldn't be of much interest. But there are some interesting bits, so it might be at least worth a listen.

No harmonic progression, yet it still modulates!

You're a real comedian, Ozan.

Cheers,

I heard that once before, from my acquaintance, the retired Director of the
Royal Conservatory of Brussels who settled down in Izmir. But his remark was
due more to my abilities at making people laugh. I was serious this time. If
you can't hear the key change, who can blame you?

Oz.

Now you take note of the fact that you can take any major or minor
triad on the 5-limit hexagonal tiling of 5-limit triads, and convert
every chord of this back to something in 5-limit JI, and suddenly you
have more different versions than you can shake a stick at.

Here's a thought--a java program which will spew out an original
version of Pavane or Canon or whatever, everytime you click on it,
giving a downloadable midi version. Each click nets you a new version.
Since the JI versions can be mapped to et versions, this would also
mean you could
spew out endless et versions.

To say nothing of the indefinetely cacophonic purity of 0-tET.

Yes, the one in the podcast is actually called Drift Dhikr II, and it is here:

http://mysterybear.net/article/19/drift-dhikr-ii

The earlier piece (related, but different) is here:

http://mysterybear.net/article/12/drift-dhikr

They are not literal dhikr in the way that people practice it, but the intention is similar. (I've recorded more traditional ones as well, see http://belovedmusic.com.) Thanks for your interest!

Drift-Dhikr 1 is most awe-inspiring. I like the aerial resonant timbres
drift constantly while the beats glide. The perpetual smooth transition
creates an eerie atmosphere as if the listener was marooned on a Galilean
moon with a purple frozen sky. One can almost feel the inter-planetary power
surges pulse across the desolate icy terrain shadowed by the rising gigantic
Jupiter.

Lovely!

Oz.

Why bother with unruly tets
Or calculate more irksome frets
When we can sit and contemplate
An octave equally to null partite?

# MP3 audio (21.2MB)
# Ogg-Vorbis audio (2.8MB)

21.2 MB vs 2.8 MB? What is with the huge mo3 files? You might as well
post a flac or even a wav file.

🔗Dave Seidel <dave@superluminal.com>

4/10/2006 2:28:08 AM

It's because of the high bitrate: 320kpbs. The wav file from which I made the mp4 and ogg files is 93.5MB. But the flac version (I just tried it) is only 17.5MB, which is pretty reasonable, being smaller in this case than the mp3.

Wow, it's unusual for flac to go down to 320kbps. Is the
wav stereo 16/44.1? If so, perhaps you are forcing your
mp3 encoder to do 320, while something in your music happens
to work well with FLAC. Have you tried this with any other
of your pieces?

-Carl

🔗Dave Seidel <dave@superluminal.com>

4/10/2006 5:17:20 AM

Yes, the wav is stereo, 16-bit, 44.1kHz, 1411kbps. I did the MP3 encoding from within Audacity, which uses LAME 3.96, and it is set to 320. When I tested FLAC this morning, I used FLAC frontend 1.7.1, which is set to encoding level 6, whatever that means.

I'll have to try FLAC'ing some of my other things and see if I see similar size ratios.
