The Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sruti is still a
pitiful little stub. I was about to try to improve it myself, but I
realized I still don't know that much about the subject and I have no
good references. Could you more knowledgeable people please add what
you know? I'll be happy to edit and wikify it but it needs more
content first.

I'm not willing to venture into working on the Wikipedia
article itself, but i did write a webpage about this a
long time ago, and after what i wrote, i included a lot
of stuff from Paul Erlich and others:

Perhaps you can use it to add more to the Wikipedia article.

The most pertinent thing i can say is that, based
on my research of very ancient music-theory (going
all the way back to the Sumerians), i strongly support
the theory that the 22 srutis originated as a chain
of perfect-5ths and 4ths (3/2 and 4/3 ratios).

On the 1st March 2006, I wrote:

Have you read that? It gives no further sources, but
as I wrote, I think its arguments are mostly cogent.
IIRC, Gene thought it rather generic. It was written
by S Vidyasankar. This is probably the link that monz
is missing at the botom of his page, referenced above:

"The Theory of 22 Srutis, by Vidyasankar Sundaresan
(i no longer have a good link for this)".

For many more articles on Indian (especially Carnatic)
music, see the list at:
