Zero

Hey gang...you know, I think the world of this list and many of the folks on it, and have learned much over the years, and will continue to do so, I'm sure. But, the brouhaha about zero, and 1/1 as an interval or not, is amazing to me...the amount of energy being expended on this subject compared to the real importance of it, in my opinion, is astounding. In the time this arguement is raging, maybe you guys could, instead, be writing some interesting music, or doing some sort of meaningful activity. No real big deal, but yow...best...HH

You don't realize the significance of this philosophical discussion on
mathematics of music?

Shame.

Good looking out, Neil. It can be tricky to avoid these things
online, at least for someone as maniacal as myself... I'm still
learning how (thankfully, I avoided this one).

Not only is it pointless, it's off-topic for this list.

Though this discussion is the worst I can remember right now,
there have been others (endless JI vs. ET debates, for example).
If any of our moderators have the time, I would suggest they
not hessitate to step in and try to snap people out of these
circular discussions in the future.

How? Ozan seems determined to get the last word; I suggest we give it
to him.

Why you snivelling intolerant despot. Unison is only off-topic for this list
when everyone acknowledges that it's not an interval.

Why don't you let the others decide for themselves?

Why don't you instead tell me a sensible word to shut me up? Such as proving
that I'm wrong? Or else, acknowledging that I have a valid point?

This *is* getting beyond the bounds of the acceptable, Ozan.

He suggested censorship. Care you find a more appropriate term?

Apologies if I misconstrued!

I said moderators should step in and try to snap people out
of it. In other words, post and say, "Hey guys, this thread
is getting pretty far off-topic."

Literally censoring off-topic posts is actually quite common
in academic mailing lists and newsgroups. It can be abused,
but it can also mean the difference between functional
discourse and dysfunctional. I wasn't suggesting it, but
maybe it should be discussed.

OK. This is getting pretty far off the topic, which is tuning. Taking
it to metatuning would make a lot of sense.

A decision to change the moderation policies of this list should
not be made on any other list.

I meant that questions in the philosophy of mathematics on what the
nature of zero is are off-topic.

Yeah, that's extremely obvious. I love the guy who came in to
complain about the trolls but couldn't leave without offerring
his 2 cents.

Yes, please acknowledge my regret, apology and well sentiments dear Carl.

Still, living in a country where uttering the undesirable word in public
means persecution, It is desirable that you understand my consternation.

Humbly,
Oz.
