Since the events for Microfest 2006 are scattered over
3 months, i made a Word document of a calendar showing
them all at a glance:

/tuning/files/monz/microfest-2006-calendar.doc

I'm hoping that i can participate by giving a
Tonescape demo, utilizing Ben Johnston's music.

I was about to go into a rant about why you shouldn't distribute
things in Microsoft Word format (see
http://goldmark.org/netrants/no-word/attach.html if you want to know
why), but then I realized you probably wouldn't care because you're
not making Tonescape portable either.

Why even bother with his doc when you can just look at http://www.microfest.org/ ?

Thanks for pointing this out. I'm already aware of
all of these concerns, and in fact i originally intended
to make a simple .gif graphic and post that. It's easy
to use the Calendar Wizard in Word to make a calendar,
and i was then going to just take a screenshot of it.

The only reason i decided to use the Word document itself
was because the event titles are so long that in order
to keep the calendar in the "at a glance" format i
wanted, the font size would have to be so small that
the entries would have been illegible.

> but then I realized you probably wouldn't care because
> you're not making Tonescape portable either.

You misunderstand me. To clarify:

1) You should never categorically assume that i
"probably wouldn't care", because it always matters
to me to get my work out into the world in a form
that makes it useful to others.

2) I never said that i'm "not making Tonescape portable".
It's just that we have to defer portability to a later
date, because Tonescape relies heavily on Microsoft
gaming technology, and it would be a major undertaking
to port it to the Mac, and that's just not something that
we can do right now.

As for Linux, it's my experience that people who use
Linux don't want to pay for programs at all, and this
is a commercial venture, so no, we don't have any plans
to port it to Linux.

I'm a person who likes to see data on a graph, which
is kind of what my calendar is. The Microfest website
just lists everything, and that gives me no sense of
the "big picture".

Hey, take it or leave it. My calendar is there for those
who find it useful, and for those who don't, just read
the listings off microfest.org.

How about portability to a Microsoft Windows machine with no internet
connection? Mine just got dozens of music programs installed on it,
which I'll be asking about on MMM . . .

If you do, would you stick around in an online manner and keep a
discussion going for a couple of days? This business with being gone
for a couple weeks and then sending out 40 responses to threads that
have been cold for a long time (some of them, at least) makes it hard
to concentrate on the issues at hand. At least for me. I'm sure you've
been busy or travelling, but stay engaged - especially if we have to
start sussing out your soft/hardware! :)

Cheers,
Jon

I can try . . .

Hmm . . . well, the responses were for the benefit of the people I was
responding to, most of whom don't seem to mind the few weeks' delay, so
if ignoring them helps you concentrate, please do so.

With all the time I spend making music, I'm afraid even staying caught
up on all these lists is becoming more and more difficult for me, and
that is not likely to get better. But I don't want to turn a blind eye
to your complaints/concerns. What do you suggest?

Right, sorry to chime in, just that if you are planning on debugging
your setup or getting your recording scenario going, it will be a lot
easier to flow the information if it is a little more, aah,
concentrated. :)

> With all the time I spend making music...

'Tis a good thing.

> What do you suggest?

Wait til you have some time to dedicate to the situation, and then max
out. Naturally, I'm just speculating, but frequently getting up and
running with a computer music setup requires full attention til it is
smoothed out. Anyhow, this (my fussing) is all pretty minor, don't
give it a lot of thought.

Cheers,
Jon

Part of our security system is to have the program locked
(or soon, when the free demo becomes available on our
website, only certain parts of it locked) and to require
online activation to register it with us and get it going.
So it requires being online at least the one time that
you activate it.

After that, we'd hope that users would stay online
*whenever* they use Tonescape, so that they could receive
automatic updates when we issue them, and automatically
send detailed error reports to us whenever a bug is
encountered, with a single click of a button. We'll
probably also offer optional features like notification
alerts whenever a new Tonespace, Tuning, or Musical Piece
file is uploaded to our website for the whole Tonescape
community. Etc., etc.

I would hope that there is some way for you to become
a Tonescape user, so if you have problems with anything
i post here about the software, i want to address them.

If a sense of etiquette prompts you to refrain from
asking here, then by all means, please feel free to
contact me privately. I *want* to discuss your issues.

I'll say something: Such measures are seldom in the interest

challenge/response, PACE, dongles, etc - a pox on all of them. Give me
