Ozan's post about the Turkish professor who is locked into a narrow view of tuning is a perfect example of how the human ego can be used as a force to promote stupidity...HHH

And that's not all Neil... People here actually believe that a major and
minor chords of common practice Western Music are Pythagorean by default!
The lenght to which some have gone to justify it is simply incredible. This
misunderstanding arises from the fact that traditional Maqam Music pitches
are mapped the wrong way in the Arel-Ezgi system, where the E of C-E-G is
81/64 and Eb is 32/27.

Burhan Yilmaz Uysal, defender of this system, yet a germanophile like his
predecessor Gultekin Oransay, suggests, by 1977, 53 equal divisions of the
octave as well, where he refers to the Holdrian comma `proper` (uygun) and
to 53-EDO as `in tune` (uyumlu). I have his published work of 2001 (reviewed
1996) right here: "Trk Gelenek Muskisi ve Sistem / Dokunga (Klavye)"

As one might infer correctly from the title, he also introduces new keyboard
designs (mostly from Germany, including some sketches made by himself) for
performing microtonal polyhpony in Turkish Maqam Music.

Cordially,
Oz.

Ah, and one more thing... Prof. Salih Murat Uzdilek, who is remembered as
the mathematical pillar of the Arel-Ezgi system was the first to suggest ,
in his article `Science and Music` (1944), the `Turkish Cent`: 2400th root
of 2. Apparently, he never realised the fact that his proposal changed
virtually nothing in the understanding of Pythagorean tuning. The confusion
arises from the religious devotion to the 24 tones in question. Thankfully,
monz has referenced Ekrem Karadeniz instead in his Tonal Encyclopedia (yea,
we know he hates it known as Monzopedia!) for "Trk Senti": 10600th root of
2, which spares us a lot of misery, humiliation and grief.

Oz.
