The ultimate microtonal music workstation

What would be the optimum requirements for the ultimate microtonal (portable) music workstation for Mac OS and Windows XP laptops, with samplers, sequencers, digital recording apparatus, surround sound, the works? What is the best pro-audio/midi software collection that goes with it? Also, is there a slim foldaway midi keyboard with 88 touch-sensitive keys anywhere? Lastly, what is the closest alternative to build-your-own-microtonal-keyboard kit?

Cordially,
ozan

Also, where can I get a keyboard with more freakin keys on it? I have a keyboard that I can retune but it only has like 61 keys, so in many of the tunings I want to use it's less than two octaves and the pitches are so spread out physically I can't play any good chords. Also the 7-white-5-black pattern is distracting if the tuning doesn't follow that pattern.

What I really want is a cheap midi instrument with a giant 2D array of keys. (Unfortunately I think midi only allows for something like 128 pitches... grrr)

Good point Keenan! Maybe the lego toy company can help us build the ultimate
flexible microtonal keyboard:

What about expensive?

Correctly implemented, it allows for 2^21 = 2097152 pitchs, but the
qualifier is the problem.

Keenan,

I have a Starrlabs keyboard that I'm considering
selling. It has 288 keys (four octaves times six
"keyboards) on a 2-D platform. I use five MIDI
channels for each instrument I want to play in my
53-eq array. However, as great as it is as a composing
tool, it's difficult to make it sound "musical" (touch
sensitivity isn't great).

As you may also know, Johnny Reinhard has someone
working on a generalized keyboard as well.
