That shows you how cock-eyed both conventional
and pseudo-avante-garde (serialism and alternative tunings)
music theory is.

Melody is the supreme musical form based on objective
criteria: it's 3-dimensionality (contour/interval/pitch).

Next comes 2-part polyphony/counterpoint.

Then comes 3 or more part counterpoint, of which
harmony is a special case.

Why are harmony exercises written in whole notes?

The default setting on a MIDI sequencer is 120 quarter
notes per minute.

Whole notes are 400% slower than qurter notes.

If you slowed down human speech 400% would it still
be able to be perceived as speech? HELL, NO!

So harmony taken separately IS NOT MUSIC!
