My vote would have to go with 1980s UK/British synth
pop. That's the most inspirational pop/rock period
for me in terms of melodies and counterpoint.

Concrete examples:

1. Dance Hall Days: Wang Chung

2. Broken Wings: Mr. Mister

3. Hold Me Now: Thompson Twins

4. Owner of a Lonely Heart: Yes

5. Shout: Tears for Fears

6. I Ran: Flock of Seagulls

7. Don't You Forget About Me/Alive and Kicking: Simple Minds

8. Cars: Gary Numan

Hi Bill,

How about Depeche Mode: Speak & Spell (Album)? Now that is really
something in terms of snappy melodies and counterpoint, classic synth
pop!

You know, that typical synth pop counterpoint was a result of the
financial necessity to use the cheap (those are definitely not cheap
anymore!) monophonic synths of the time. But the musical results were
often awesome!

I'm not so sure about the most accurate 12TET claim. The oscillators
of those synths were often heavily detuned to get a thick sound. And
then there's the drift of analogue oscillators. Note that both of
these are often considered very desirable features in modern softsynths.

But I guess that the tuning became more accurate as the 80s progressed
and digital synths like DX7 got more affordable.
