Bach invented equal temperament

I wrote to this person correcting him, and got a reply that he would
reword the lesson (which he hasn't). I think he was offended that
anyone would care about accuracy when the point is teaching children
music.
Why bother telling children the truth when it's easier to just tell
them it was all Bach?

Oh, that's painful.

Not only did Bach invent ET, but ET is based on an
arithmetic progression of frequency - the same number
of Hertz difference between each consecutive pair.

"Lies My Music Teacher Told Me", anyone...?

Cheers,
Patty

Hi all

Although name of bach is attached to invention of ET , but it was farabi
who worked on pythagorean musical legacy and used 144-ET (may be
impressed by Cleonides) and proposed and used theory of 12-ET . it is
documented in his great book" moosighi-al-kabir" and works of
Dr.barkeshli , great acoustician of iran . barkeshli named one degree of
144-EDO as farab : http://www.tonalsoft.com/enc/f/farab.aspx

Sorry, Shaahin - guess my sarcasm wasn't quite obvious
enough.

Last I heard, our best guess at Bach's tuning was
something along the lines of Weckmeister III. I'm well
aware that the Well Tempered Clavier was never meant
to be played in ET. It's all good... :)

Peace,
Patty
