Hideous Windows error beep

Windows (2000, anyway) makes this ghastly beep all the time. Is there
any way to turn it off? I can't seem to find a wav file to delete, or
a setting to change.

Gene,

Does this beep come through your sound system, or does
it seem to come from the computer itself?

If the former, then you should be able to change or
disable it in the "Sounds" section of Control Panel.

If the latter, then it's coming from the dinky little
speaker inside the computer. Your only option (as far
as I know) is to open up your computer and unplug that
speaker.

Cheers,
Patty

In this case there may be a BIOS setting at play.

I comes through the sound system, but I can't figure out how to
disable it.

Gene, go to control panel, sounds and multimedia, select no sounds scheme,
or individually change critical stop, exclamation, program error and system
default sounds. This should do it.

Thanks; I never looked under the "scheme" menu.

You're welcome! Say... have you perchance read the Grove article on mode?

Cordially,

I forget what version of windows you said you had, but
it's control panel -> sounds -> sounds tab, then select
"no sounds" from the drop down "sound schemes" list box.
Then scan the "Program events" box for any speaker icons
and remove them (yes, amazingly, "no sounds doesn't
always mean no sounds), then hit Apply, then "Save As"
"Really No Sounds" for good measure.

If that doesn't work, check your BIOS.
