A real virtual instrument in performance (really!)

It seemed to me that the original impetus of this thread was how (and
how well) a virtual instrument could reproduce (in concert or
recording) the music originally written for an acoustic instrument.
Now it seems to have just become a mish-mash of other tangents.

But in light of this, I note that Kyle Gann posts today about upcoming
performances of a new piece of his:

http://www.artsjournal.com/postclassic/archives20051001.shtml#103316

and I note this in the column:

"... and they both wanted a microtonal piece. Well, a microtonal
flute-and-clarinet duo sounded like an exercise in futility - why go
through the horror of microtones for only two lines, which would
barely let you hear the in-tuneness of the intervals? So I added a
virtual piano part (which will be played on keyboard sampler by Blair
McMillan, who recently had a nice profile in the Times), a fretless
bass ..."

He didn't describe the tuning exactly, but mentioned 30 pitches per
octave, so I imagine it is one of Kyle's JI pieces. The main point
being that he is bringing his music to life with the resources he
deems appropriate, and one can hardly argue with that.

If you check out his column, be sure to read some of the recent good
posts on Charles Ives as well.

Cheers,
Jon

Sorry - wish Yahoo allowed one to edit their posts. I said:

It's early, and I didn't clearly see the link in his post - you can
view the tuning here: http://www.kylegann.com/AstheDaytune.html

This isn't possible with a mailing list. With a wiki,
however...

The Yahoo lists that are important to me I have delivered, and realize
that they are mail lists. When I simply read one and occasionally post
through the web interface, I sometimes forget the mail list angle and
then expect it to work like many of the forums I visit, where you can
edit your posts.

Nothing is perfect.

Cheers,
Jon

With a wiki/blog hybrid, you could have posts RSSed to you.

Thanks. Not perfect, but another way, I suppose.
