Diatonic circle of thirds

By this I mean the following cycle in the diatonic scale:

C==>E==>G==>B==>D==>F==>A==>C

Does this have some recognized name?

I don't think you can be much clearer than your subject line: "Diatonic
circle of thirds". Very well-known to musicians and academic music
theorists. Note that the pattern of sizes, MmMmmMm, is a
distributionally even pattern just like that of the steps in the scale.
This is how I think of the explanation for that phenomenon:

Maybe you're seeing it strangely on your terminal, but this isn't
broken into two groups of 4 notes each -- it's a single chain of notes.

Not to mention either very close or exactly the melodic motive, in the
clarinet (IIRC), programatically depicting the waves of the ocean in
one of the four orchestral ("Sea") interludes in Benjamin Britten's
"Peter Grimes". The "F" may have been sharped. But it's stacked thirds.

Cheers,
Jon

This is probably not what you are going for, but maybe (if "Diatonic Circle of
Thirds" isn't sitting right with you) you could try and incorporate "mediant" in
the naming of this series.....

I'm not seeing anything strangely. Excuse me for thinking like a musican Paul,
I know that kind thing is frowned upon around here.

I restrain myself from telling you where to go with that 'tude., but it's as old
as this list and quite sad too.

Maybe next you'll tell me 1/1 doesn't = 1/1?

Doesnt the statement that its from the diatonic scale imply there
are two groups of notes, the SolLaTiDo Dominant Tonus and DoReMiFa
Tonic Tonus?

yes Britten used every type of variation on this type of stacked thirds that one could imagine , plus some that only he might imagine

Hi David,

There was no attitude here; I was just trying to help clarify the
question hoping to get more relevant answers.

My apologies for any perceived insult.

I have to think like a musician every day!

Best,
Paul

Yes, there are a lot of posts here that don't appear correctly on my
screen -- sometimes, entire paragraphs are missing! -- but I chalk that
up to Yahoo rather than my monitor.
