Having played only a nylon string interchangable fingerboard, I am unaware
of the extent to which these dampen the strings on a steel string.
However, if the magnets were alternating north-south longitudinal strips
instead of a single piece, the steel layer above, as long as it was
magnetic, _would_ act as a keeper and greatly diminish the density of
field lines above the fingerboard.
