The Harmony of the Spheres joins the 21st century

As an occasional reader of this group (and a long-time enthusiast of
alternative scales) I have read with interest the various posts that
reflect on the similarities between the sound spectrum and that of
vision / color / etc.

For those who also find this topic worth thinking about, I recommend
the latest issue of Scientific American magazine. SciAm is generally
a fairly hefty read, but they do try - on the whole - to make sure
that non-experts are able to walk away with some appreciation for the
subject matter of the article.

The article in question is entitled, "Is the Universe Out of Tune?"
The lede is, "Like the discord of key instruments in a skillful
orchestra quietly playing the wrong piece, mysterious discrepancies
have arisen between theory and observation of the 'music' of the
cosmic microwave background. Either the measurements are wrong or
the universe is stranger than we thought."

From there the authors go on to construct an elaborate, but
completely logical, analogy between the background of waves that are
the remnants of the Big Bang and are still echoing about the
universe, and a symphony orchestra. The link to the magazine is:

Scroll down to "Print Edition: August" and look for the headline
for "Cosmology: Is the Universe out of Tune."

I don't know how much longer the link will be there, so hurry if
you're interested.

Hope you enjoy.

The link is still there, but it does not give you the entire article,
for that you have to pay five USD. Which I did, and I am quite willing
to upload it to the files area, because this is a scientific group and
the article in question is an article dedicated to our scientific
interest, and not the entire August issue, hence (at least by my
European law) the copyright does not apply. But the files area of this
group does not have enough free space, as the article is about .8 MB.

We filled up the Files section on this list long ago,
and created a new Yahoo group expressly for the purpose
of holding additional files for this one.

/tuning_files/

There are several moderators there (including me),
so just apply for membership and you'll be approved
by whomever gets you first.

(Note that the files area there is almost full too,
so i guess tuning_files2 isn't far behind ...)

No it doesn't. Sorry for the spam. Must have to do
something with going the Yahoogroups route. When I
typed them in manually, they worked OK.
Michael :(

You *must* be signed-in to Yahoo in order to link
to the Files section of a Yahoo group.

I didn't bother to try the links after singing in
... i just signed in to Yahoo, went to the Files
section of tuning_files, and found the .pdf there.

Looks like a good article, and certainly right up
*my* alley! Thanks for making it available.
