....is there a way to do it? or, is it necessary to have a reference set of
pitches from a monochord, or mathematically exact pre-manufactured pitches
like those of pitch pipes or on recordings? What does Jorgensen say in his
book?

I suppose one could know beat rates of the thirds or fifths and go from there,
no?
