Seydi's Book on Music

The Institute for the History of Arabic-Islamic
Science of Frankfurt (Main) University has just
published the following:
Eugenia Popescu-Judetz (Ed., Transl.): Seydi's Book on
Music. A 15th cent. Turkish discourse. Translated,
annotated and edited in collaboration with Eckhard
Neubauer. 2004. XX, 276, 4 pp.
ISBN 3-8298-5007-7

The book will appear as "sold out or not available" on
computers, which is nonsense. It is just off the
press, but I had to obtain my copy from the Institute
itself because booksellers were unable to order one
for me.

It describes the Anatolian musical theory of 12 main
modes (makam), 7 (not six) secondary modes, only 4
branch modes and and expanded universe of 58 (!)
compound modes (terkib). All this is written in verse.
The second part of the book is in prose, and it covers
theoretical matters. He treats the division of the
octave and the intervals, musical metres, their basic
patterns and their 'cycles'. Compositional rules for
suites follow, and the closing paragraph is pointing
to the possibility fo dividing the octave into 24
steps (!).

In my opinion, the book's editorial bonus is the
footnote explanatory section which is nearly the
entire second half the book, and which is filled with
background explanations and cross-references. For
somebody like me who just has started reading Turkish
theory in English, it already, after having owned it
for less than an hour, looks like the ideal book to
start with.

If you know somebody residing in Frankfurt, it makes
sense letting him buy it for you if you want it. Their
asked price across the table is EUR 35 plus 7 % VAT
(multiply that with whatever Fahrenheit for the
currency of your domicile), as opposed to a list price
of EUR 53.

Michael

Cris,
as I said, computers don't seem to know about it -
yet. Here is the website of the Institute:
http://web.uni-frankfurt.de/fb13/igaiw/
Their publications are on
http://web.uni-frankfurt.de/fb13/igaiw/publication/music.html,
but this particular volume hasn't yet made its way on
this page.
Their e-mail address is igaiw@rz.uni-frankfurt.de
