a great song by one of my favorite microtonal musicians!
(hee hee ...)

I edited out you discussion of equivalences here but by coincidence these are the ones that Fokker pointed out. why do you call it "pythagorean"? simply because it uses
only sharps, flats, double-sharps, and double-flats as
accidentals? but it isn't pythagorean at all, it's pure
meantone.

I call it pythagorean notation because like the document from xenharmonikon 2 i had a link to is based on a cycle of fifths as Erv points out.
Gene is also describing it as the fifth being the generator. -monz

Obviously if one were to transpose old meantone music into 31 , there would be no reason to change the notation. I find the premise that this notation would attract any more people to 31 than otherwise will remain a point that Gene and I will not agree. Actually playing the music in 31 might do so regardless of what the notation would be. i agree with everything you said in your post. but, with
all due respect, i think that you and Kraig are both missing
Gene's point. as i understand it, Gene is simply encouraging
musicians with traditional training to finally *hear* what
the standard meantone notation has been notating all along.
